June 24, 2025United Kingdom

DISTRIBUTED-WORK-MODEL/LONDON, 24th June 2025 – New research has revealed the true cost of being a tennis fan, with the average spend of a Wimbledon attendee totalling £733¹ per person.

That’s according to new research from Clearpay, a leader in Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL), who is supporting select players in their matches at this year’s tournament. The average spend is based on fans who have previously purchased tickets or a grounds pass.

The biggest expense is tickets, averaging £106 per person. Travel to and from the event comes next at £92, followed by accommodation at £84 and food at £83. Drinks – before, during and after the match – cost an average of £80, while fans spend £78 on a new outfit for the day.

Official Wimbledon merchandise comes in at £76 on average, with technology like cameras and phone accessories adding £71. Hair and makeup for pre-event styling round out the list of Wimbledon expenses at £64.

When it comes to attitudes towards expenditure at Wimbledon, while more than a quarter (27%) are willing to spend a little more but keep it controlled, nearly one in five (19%) attendees say they are happy to splash out, seeing it as part of the ‘Wimbledon experience’.

Rich Bayer, UK Country Manager at Clearpay, advises that the tournament can be enjoyed within budget. He explains: “Attending a major event like Wimbledon is an unforgettable experience, and with a bit of forward planning and making smart choices, fans can enjoy the atmosphere while managing their spending.”

Rich provides his top tips for responsible spending at Wimbledon:

  1. Plan and budget ahead – Set a clear budget for tickets, food, and extras before the day to avoid impulse spending. This will help you make informed financial decisions.

  2. Travel smart – Once you’re in London, the tournament is easily accessible by public transport. If you need to travel by car,  consider a carpool to cut down on travel and parking expenses. These can easily add up, especially in central London.

  3. Pack food essentials –  Wimbledon welcomes people bringing in their own food, so take advantage of this. Packing a picnic can help reduce costs.

  4. Raid your existing wardrobe – Instead of buying a brand-new outfit, check your existing wardrobe for versatile pieces you already own. Look online or on social media for inspiration and take the opportunity to style a classic item, such as a white linen shirt or dress, and turn it into a unique and cost-effective Wimbledon ‘look’.

  5. Make the most of at-home viewing – Don’t worry if you can’t get a ticket, you can always recreate the excitement of the tournament at home with a Wimbledon-themed BBQ and watch with friends and family. All the fun at a fraction of the cost.
