Afterpay Supports Black & Pink and Transgender Law Center Missions to Empower LGBTQ+ Communities

Afterpay’s mission is built around inclusion: to power an economy where everyone wins and a future which embodies fairness for all. Pride Month is arguably the world’s biggest celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, and it’s important for brands to listen, learn from, and uplift their communities. As Afterpay continues to grow and develop as a company, we have a responsibility to empower our communities and further our impact in-line with our values. To honor both the LGBTQ+ community and Pride Month, as well as the long fight for LGBTQ+ rights, Afterpay partnered with Black & Pink and Transgender Law Center during the month of June to raise money and awareness for these two important organizations.

Black & Pink National is a prison abolitionist organization dedicated to abolishing the criminal punishment system and liberating LGBTQIA2S+ people and people living with HIV/AIDS who are affected by that system through advocacy, support, and organizing.

Transgender Law Center changes law, policy, and attitudes so that all people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of their gender identity or expression. Transgender Law Center (TLC) is the largest national trans-led organization advocating for a world in which all people are free to define themselves and their futures. Grounded in legal expertise and committed to racial justice, TLC employs a variety of community-driven strategies to keep transgender and gender nonconforming people alive, thriving, and fighting for liberation.

Throughout the month of June, more than 80,000 Afterpay shoppers “topped up” their purchases by donating $1 at check out to both organizations through Afterpay’s Top-Up program. More than $80,000 was raised for these organizations, providing more than $41,000 to each organization in support of their advocacy work and missions. Since starting the Top-Up programs in 2021, Afterpay has raised more than $600,000¹ for worthwhile causes such as Braintrust Founders Studio and Surfrider

From Transgender Law Center: “From all of us at TLC, thank you to Afterpay for its support. Your support means we continue to create a path to freedom for everyone, centering trans Black, Indigenous and people of color, who hold the knowledge, power, and joy to create a future where we can all not only survive but thrive. This support will help TLC promote our visionary national Trans Agenda for Liberation; develop movement leaders and build power for change; and create and advance the legal and policy frameworks that respect and support transgender equality.” Kris Hayashi, Executive Director

From Black+Pink: “We are extremely thankful to Afterpay and our beloved community for supporting the work of Black and Pink, National! The overwhelming response is a message to system impacted youth who are LGBTQ+ and/or Living with HIV that they are loved and deserve a space that is safe and affirms who they are.” – Andrew Alemán, Deputy Director of People Power & National Partnerships.

With Afterpay, shoppers can pay for their purchases over four installments – helping people spend responsibly without falling into credit card debt.
